Camping with Kids

1. Show enthusiasm. A child will be fascinated if adults show excitement over the adventure they're about to have.

2. Make the trip action-packed. Children love animals and "wild beasts". Take the kids on a wilderness safari or make a game out of trying to spot different types of animals and birds.

3. Kids are kids. They are naturally active. If their attention is diverted by a bug or a bird, let them explore.

4. Show, don't tell. Children prefer to watch how adults do things rather hear how things are done. Show your kids how to camp and involve them in activities.

5. Ensure a good night's rest. Sleeping outdoors is especially tough because of the hard, uneven ground. Make sure the children's sleeping bags are warm and dry. Take along roll-up sleeping pads or inflatable mattresses.

7. Teach kids the "take only pictures, leave only footprints" rule. Let the kids pick up their own litter. They'll develop a sense of pride by taking care of the land.

8. Kids like to be treated as equals. It is important to talk to them at eye level so as not to intimidate them.

9. Take pictures. Fun times can easily be forgotten by some kids but great moments can be captured by a camera.

10. Communicate. Including the child in communication and decision-making will help him develop a sense of responsibility.
